The Topeka Metropolitan Transit Authority needed an update to their web presence. So instead of fancying things up, we stripped it down – and made their site even simpler than before. Now, it has a clear hierarchy of information – with the most important news immediately available. WordPress categories, posts, and pages, make this work! We built a fully custom theme based on NoCss, and used Lightbox and My Page Order plugins. Look for TMTA on Twitter and Facebook, too!

When redesigning a site is as simple as changing the theme, you’ve saved time and effort. Even building a custom theme, or customizing an existing theme, is much easier than building a site from scratch. WordPress is fast. It can be as easy or hard as one wants to make it. There’s a plugin for everything. It’s an evolving tool. And that’s why we love it.

Anyway, we’ve redone our site, based on the NoCss theme, and using the Excerpt Image Link plugin. Tell us what you think!

We frequently find examples of people or groups who just don't quite "get" social media. But that's why we are excited about the Vatican's latest communications strategies.

As a social media consultancy, we frequently find examples of companies, organizations, and individuals who just don’t quite “get” social media. This is fine, of course, because if everyone got it, we wouldn’t have much work. Nonetheless, it’s always refreshing to find social media being used well in unexpected places. That’s why we are excited about the latest communications strategies being executed by the Vatican.

Yes, you heard me right. The Holy See is taking to the ‘tubes in an effort to reach out to young people, worldwide. According to the Religious Affiars Correspondent in The Guardian, pope2you.net will go live tomorrow and will include links to the official Vatican YouTube page, wiki, Facebook application, and even an iPhone application (sadly, not called iPope).

Monsignor Paul Tighe, secretary to the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, which is responsible for the site, told the Guardian: “If a church does not communicate then it ceases to be a church. It is not simply the technologies of communication that are changing, the culture of communication is changing also.

“Young people are not turning to TV or radio or papers. They have social networks and preferred websites. We’re trying to see what that means for the church.”

I couldn’t have said it better myself. I should also point out that Monsignor Tighe is the secretary to the Pontifical Council for Social Communication. The fact that a Pontifical Council for Social Communication even exists shows that His Holiness is way ahead of the vast majority of organizations in embracing social media as a means of reaching the community.

The article doesn’t mention whether the Vatican has considered adding Twitter to its social communications repertoire. One wonders if this is the result of uncertainty as to the implications of tweets delivered ex cathedra. What if the Pontiff had a typo in a tweet? Would his misspelling actually be the new correct spelling? I’m sure there are many cannonical questions would need to be answered before the Vicar of Christ could feel comfortable tweeting.

Nonetheless, Pope Benedict XVI and the Vatican get a gold star from Mixed Media, for their progressive efforts to reach out to young Catholics and the 21st century.

We won't brag much, but we're happy to say we've emerged victorious for the Fix the Streets campaign.

We won’t brag much, but we’re happy to say we’ve emerged winners for the Fix the Streets campaign.

It’s a victory for transparency — all the information we had about the issue was online and accessible from the start of the campaign. As new information came to light, it went public right away.

We engaged concerned voters and online commenters with speed and precision. Much of the debate took place on CJOnline.com — where we were able to respond with positive and persuasive information.

Our media saw plenty of circulation. Our commercials received great reviews (thanks to Gizmo!), and our mail pieces were well-received.

Our canvassers made hundreds of phone calls, put 650 advanced ballots out in the field, and knocked on 6,094 doors.

The campaign placed nearly 1500 yard signs all over town.

Thanks to our friends who made this possible, and the civic leaders involved with the committee.
